Australia is home to some of the largest energy storage projects in the world, notably the Hornsdale Power Reserve in Southern Australia and the 700-MW/2,800-MWh battery storage project in New South Wales, hailed to be operational in 2025 which will be designed to replace the soon-to-be-retired Eraring coal-fired power station.

The recent change in government has sharpened Australia’s focus on building renewable energy capacity, and 2022 saw over 5GW of new renewable capacity installed across a range of different technologies. However, with an 82% target of total installed renewable capacity by 2030, the country needs to quicken its pace of development for large-scale projects to avoid falling short of this.
